How is Artificial Intelligence Transforming the Web Design Field?

1) Through Artificial Design Intelligence (ADI)

This is a machine-learning-enabled application that creates websites on its own. This AI, which has been around for a few years now, made website designing accessible to all. That is, anyone with a domain name can now create a website without a website designer. WixHostinger, and GoDaddy, all now have their own dedicated ADI.

 How does it work?

Before it builds a website, the ADI will have a few questions for you. These questions will range from your objective to your age. They are to help the algorithm match your taste with millions of websites on WWW. Once you have answered the questions, it will create a website within a few minutes. Yes, it’s that simple!

2) By simplifying the Creation of Graphical User Interface (GUI)

A crucial step in the development of a website is the creation of a user interface. In a web development team, this is the task of a UI/UX designer.

Their work entails giving a tangible form to an idea. They will first draw the design on a board and develop them on a computer. They will create more than one wireframe–the rough draft of the website. These wireframes will then be tested.

AI simplifies these processes by translating the idea on a board into a coded wireframe. All the UI designer has to do is feed a picture of the design into the AI. The designer can also use AI to test UIs thus created.

3) By Customizing Content for Individual Viewers

If you have shopped online ever, you have crossed paths with AI. On such websites, its function is to read and remember the buying behaviour of users. The AI uses this data to recommend, introduce, and promote products.

This kind of ‘customization’ is not limited to ecommerce. You can find it on OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos and, of course, the good old YouTube!

These streaming services make use of AI to read the preferences of individual users. The more time you spend on these platforms the more the AI knows about you. This, probably, is one reason why these platforms are, in a way, addictive.

4) By Revolutionizing Customer Support

Chatbots, a form of AI now widely used, has enhanced the interactivity of websites. This AI can interact with a website visitor the same way a customer-support execute does. They can handle simple queries fast and can be present 24/7. As of this year, there are two kinds of chatbots in existence:

  1. Programmed chatbots
  2. AI chatbots

The former is a just piece of code that responds to certain keywords. You can only use them for simple tasks. That female voice that answers your call every time you call your bank is an example.

The latter, however, is much more advanced. They recognize complex wording and select/draft a response to the query.

5) By Reducing Time for Testing, Bug Fixing

Quality assurance is the foundation of a successful business. But, it is also the most difficult to achieve. The numerous updates to your phone OSs and apps are examples of how difficult it is to nail at the get-go. You can see this process in action in every industry on the web, including website designing.

At the centre of quality assurance lies testing and bug fixing. Until a few years ago, this was the forte of human intelligence. Teams would work extensively to assess the performance of a website.

Now, however, most of these tedious processes are done by AI. Some can give you real-time assessment, making testing and delivery much faster.

6) By Bringing New Functionality to Website Designing

Audio in films ushered in a revolution in the industry in the early 20th century. A change of a similar magnitude is happening in web development as well. This is the change of voice-based search and Voice User Interface (VUI).

VUI has given a ‘voice’ to the interaction between humans and the web. And helming this revolution is none other than AI.

Many websites, particularly in the entertainment and business sectors, use this functionality. VUI simplifies the process to interact with a website, by removing the need to type.

7) By Facilitating Semantic Search, Behavioral Results

Now, that we talk about search, there is one angle that deserves a mention. Semantic search is a species of AI seen on ecommerce websites. They are highly useful to increase user engagement and user experience.

The backbone of this AI is its ability to identify search intend. This is unlike keyword-based search. The latter depends heavily on the presence of keywords in a search query.

In semantic search, the AI understands the context of the search. For example, suppose a young user bought several camping products recently. Now, if he searches for a stove, he might just be searching for a portable one. With semantic search, your website shows him the right product and bag the sale.

8) By Helping Human Designers

There are several AI-powered tools that website designers use to simplify their work. Most of these were introduced in the latter half of the past decade. Two of the most prominent ones are:

1) uizard: A very easy tool that converts designs sketches into artboards. The design wireframes created by this tool is clickable as well. They are great for presentation and ideation.

2) Sketch2Code: It’s a tool developed by Microsoft in 2019. It uses computer vision to identify text and objects and convert them into HTML.
