7 Steps to Creating Creative Real Estate Logos

Symbols speak louder than words. This is why having a professional, unique and eye catching logo is such an important part of any branding strategy. A logo should act as a concise visual identity that conjures up all the positive images and messages associated with your client’s brand, whenever their customer sees it! This is especially the case with Real Estate logos due to the intense competition between brands within the industry.

7 Steps to Creating Creative Real Estate Logos

1. Avoid over-used symbols and clichés.

Quickly Google ‘real estate logo’ and you will uncover thousands of logos based on conventional symbols such as roofs, windows, open doors etc. Yawn, yawn. Using such imagery will make your client appear boring and unimaginative. What is worse, the logo will fail to stand out from the mass of your client’s competitors, meaning that their customers will find nothing memorable about the logo.

2. Look for abstract or geometric symbolism.

Instead of treading the well-worn path of standard imagery, look for alternatives. Many real estate companies now use geometric symbols such as boxes, pyramids, folded polygons and arrows to represent their business. These designs still scream out ‘property’ and ‘real estate’ without being conventional. Using an abstract symbol will unconsciously prompt the viewer to interpret the image, thus making it more memorable.

3. Think outside the box

A house is more than four walls and a roof. Think creatively about images people associate with home, whether objects or feelings. For instance, working with a key based design can convey the feelings of happiness and relief associated with moving into a new home, as well as being an obvious real estate symbol. Alternative ideas could incorporate trees or family imagery into the logo.

4. Get creative with fonts

Strong, original typography is equally important as the symbolism you use. Used correctly, a font should complement and enhance your chosen design and in some cases can allow you to dispense of symbols and images altogether. Experiment with typography and see what stands out.

5. The importance of color

People are used to seeing logos designed in a standard palette of a handful of colors. It doesn’t have to be this way. Juxtapose professional greys, blues and blacks with vibrant greens and oranges in order to inject some real personality into the logo.

6. Personality goes a long way

Companies today expect more from their logos than they used to. They expect to see a logo that expresses their corporate persona and ethos. Make sure you talk to them about how they see their brand and where they want to take their company. Ask for their design ideas. Often these conversations yield interesting symbols and concepts that can enhance the logo.

7. Persuade your client to think differently

Not all clients are willing to take the plunge and break with convention. This is where it is your job as designer to explain your concept and how it can effectively express their brand identity. Work with them throughout the process and request feedback on your ideas. Establishing a creative dialogue is an important part of creating a logo they are happy to move forward with. An effective Real Estate logo design will represent a company through its use of symbols, color scheme and typography. Each aspect needs to be carefully considered in order to accurately portray the company’s ethos and personality – and to stand out visually from their competitors.
